Live Long – Eat Healthy

Some Sugars can be Good for You!

By our Health Correspondent

Everyone knows that some sugars are bad for us. Sucrose, fructose, and glucose, whilst providing a fast energy boost, can contribute to obesity and diabetic problems, lead to rotten teeth, lower the immune system, and feed Candida.

However, there are many sugars that are less commonly known, and it has become clear over the last few years that certain rare sugars called monosaccharides and some sugar alcohols are as essential to the health of our body and immune system as vitamins, and that the lack of them can lead to many problems. This breakthrough in knowledge is as important as the realisation that Vitamin C prevents scurvy, and has already led to new rare sugar supplements which are specifically targeted to address particular deficiencies.

There has been a call to have the rare sugars classed as vitamins, but since most of them have to be taken at much higher dose levels that vitamins, this seems unlikely to happen, although over the next few years we may see some of the rare sugars being incorporated into a new form of tablet that encompasses rare sugars, vitamins and minerals.

Most people have heard of using glucosamine for healthy joints, (as the name would suggest, it is a sugar), but other sugars have even more important functions. D-Mannose for example, is required for a healthy bladder, prostate, and urinary tract, and has achieved remarkable results. Jan de Vries the Herbalist, and Dennis the Chemist in Manchester both recommend mannose for related conditions, and it is stocked by a number of medical clinics and used where antibiotics are ineffective. It is said to be particularly effective against E.coli, so could be a possible treatment when, for example, as in a recent case, children got an E.coli infection at a farm.

D-Ribose, another monosaccharide, is used by the body for healthy muscles and good energy levels, effectively supplying energy at cellular level. A natural deficiency in ribose due to metabolic or dietary problems is a possible cause of many conditions that have poor energy levels as a symptom.  Clinical trials have shown it to be an effective supplement, when taken in pure form, for heart patients and athletes who frequently have muscle trauma or need improved energy levels. ME and CFS patients have claimed complete reversal of their symptoms when taking ribose.

When health is poor, or the immune system is suffering as a result of illness or prescribed drugs, the body starts to exhibit many symptoms. It stops healing itself well, and problems linger. As a result the lifestyle can suffer, and people don’t get enough exercise. Bone density begins to suffer. Cuts take ages to heal. Bruises don’t go away. An insect bite becomes a leg ulcer.  All these things point to a deficiency in two rare sugars—a monosaccharide called D-Xylose and the sugar alcohol Xylitol. Taken in combination as they are found in nature, these are the ‘sugar-vitamins’ for bone density, healthy teeth and gums, and connective tissue repair.

Of course, there are always new products coming onto the market with remarkable claims, but what is interesting about the new healthy sugars is how the ‘secret’ is being passed from person to person, as people find they are often able to solve their own health problems and escape from a cycle of ill health that they may have been in for years.
